JPG / JPEG
A lossy photo format that compresses heavily and is accepted almost everywhere.
- Extensions:
- .jpg, .jpeg
- MIME type:
- image/jpeg
When to use it
Photographs, and any upload that expects a small, universally supported file.
Not ideal for images with sharp text, flat colour blocks or transparency.
Trade-offs
Quality is lost each time the image is re-saved. Keep an original and export once.
It does not support transparency; transparent areas become filled.
