JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which format should you use?
Choosing a format is mostly about what is in the image and where it will be used. Each format trades size against fidelity differently.
TangleOff editorial ·
JPG
Best for photographs. It compresses heavily and is accepted almost everywhere.
It does not support transparency, and repeated editing gradually degrades quality.
PNG
Best for graphics, screenshots and anything needing transparency or sharp edges.
It is lossless, which usually makes photographic files much larger than JPG.
WebP
A modern format that offers good compression for both photos and graphics, including transparency.
Support is now broad in current browsers, but some older tools and forms still expect JPG or PNG.
